Jo Malone CBE Collaborates With Zara On a Fragrance Collection

Famed British perfumer Jo Malone CBE has taken her talents to Zara, collaborating with the high street retailer on a debut collection of eight unisex fragrances.

Known for innovating in the fragrance world, the founder of Jo Loves – which launched in 2011 five years after she left Jo Malone London, having already sold it to the Estee Lauder Companies – looks set to adopt a new following through this surprise partnership.

“I really felt that I was meant to change the world again in fragrance,” Malone told Bazaar at the launch of the Zara Emotions Collection by Jo Loves – which goes on sale today.

For this project, there was no written brief or marketing goal, she notes. Inspired by Zara’s fashion archives, past and present, over the last year Malone had creative reign to compose scents with her own signature. The result are perfumes with unique personalities, much like those depicted by an outfit.

For example, Vetiver Pamplemousse (with notes of grapefruit, mandarin and vetiver) is like “a crisp white cotton shirt layered with citrus cologne, an everyday accessory for me,” she says. Ebony Wood, meanwhile, evokes “that moment of freedom and care-free adventures that are about to begin”.

Naturally, Malone recommends making them unique to you. “I have always created fragrances to be blended together. Similar to fashion, you have the freedom to be experimental,” she tells us.

Apparently, Tuberose Noir and Fleur D’Oranger “will give you the most captivating blend of scents”. Ebony Wood and Fleur D’Oranger “is a weekend favourite” for her, whereas Fleur De Patchouli and Bohemian Bluebells “is rock festival meets that sense of vibrant free spirit”.

It’s Bohemian Bluebells (with notes of lavender, sandalwood and musk) that Malone is the proudest of. “It is the most daring, powerful fragrance I have ever made,” she tells us.

Complex and captivating, it’s certainly not what you’d expect to find on the high street for just £25.95 (approx. RM140). But that’s exactly the point.
