‘No Make-Up’ Make-Up Leads The Fashion Week Beauty Trends

‘No make-up’ make-up has been a staple of the catwalks for seasons and not merely to avoid the models’ faces stealing attention from the clothes, as you might assume. In fact, healthy looking skin has become as much of a trend as statement make-up in beauty.
The spring/summer 2018 shows in New York have kicked off a month of fashion weeks and so far Mansur Gavriel, Prabal Gurung, Alexander Wang and Victoria Beckham have all confirmed the trend for seriously minimal make-up.

Backstage at the Mansur Gavriel show, Lizo, lead make-up artist for Nars told us that the fresh faced look can be considered the antithesis to ‘selfie make-up’.
“Think of this make-up as a good reality check for all the heavy social media make-up,” he explained.

Sure, the trend looks good on 20-year-old models, but it takes work for them too. When a designer asks for ‘effortless no make-up make-up,’ it actually takes real effort, Lizo notes, revealing the team exfoliated and toned skin before pressing in moisturiser, more moisture cream, eye cream and then a fine film of All Day Luminous Foundation (all by Nars) into skin “for fresh faced translucence”.

The same can be said for Victoria Beckham’s SS18 look where trend setting make-up authority Pat McGrath started with moisturiser. “It’s very fresh, very natural and all about skincare,” explained McGrath who used just a touch of beige liner on the eyes, a little gold highlighter on the cheekbones and a hint of gloss on the lids, while she even tissued off the lipstick. She added; “There’s grooming here, but the look is really natural.”

At Alexander Wang, backstage make-up royalty Diane Kendall celebrated models’ individual beauty and only used colours to enhance their features and even out the complexion.
The hair was a reflection of the natural theme, with international session stylist Guido Palau working with Ghd to give models a natural texture and create ‘lived-in’ hair with pretty movement.
