Delvaux Celebrates 125 Of René Magritte With A Whimsical Capsule Collection

To celebrate 125 Years of René Magritte, the Delvaux Magritte collection dedicates itself to the twin loves of the Belgian surrealist’s life: his wife Georgette Berger, and his art.

This Asia-exclusive Magritte collection was launched last week at the Delvaux boutique in K11 Musea in Hong Kong. Born from the Brussels-based maison’s longstanding partnership with the Magritte Foundation, the collection features whimsical handbags and leather accessories divided into four motifs emblematic of the painter’s collective art.

MAGRITTE MOTIFS

L’Amour is a homage to “L’Art de la Conversation” (1950) with its depiction of two swans on a moonlit lake. Against a twilight landscape, the waters of the lake spell out “Amour”. Delvaux adapts the cursive word and silhouettes of the swans as embroidery on its signature Brillant and Pin ranges.

L’Humour takes its cue from “Trahison des Images” (1928-1929). The painting of a hyperrealistic smoking pipe with the quote “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” (“This is not a pipe”). Thus in this range, Delvaux playfully applies the embroidery of “Ceci n’est pas un Delvaux” to its elegant Box calf. On the Pin Mini Bucket, the quote is applied in all-over flat embroidery on Taurillon Calf leather.

Then we have La Pomme, inspired by the apple, a Magritte signature found in some of his iconic paintings. In particular, in his best known work “Le Fils de L’homme” (1964). Delvaux has designed a whimsical range that includes a playful apple-shaped crossbody pouch and a zipped card holder.

And lastly, L’Homme, a series that pays tribute to the quintessential René Magritte icon, the man in a bowler hat. Combined with another iconic Magritte leitmotif, a sky of clouds, this image adorns Delvaux’s Pin City and other smaller items.

A SPECIAL EXHIBITION

At the launch of the collection at the Delvaux boutique in K11 Musea in Hong Kong, Delvaux also housed a mini Magritte exhibition that features seven works from the artist that were never before shown to the public. Complementing these artworks are two special digital art that brings Magritte’s canvas to life with the help of AI. These digital talking heads narrate the epic love story between René and Georgette, before leading visitors into the main galleria.
