Fashion’s biggest night is coming back

As May rolls around, our favourite A-listers will be gathering yet again at the annual 2024 Met Gala, which will be held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City.

Holding the title for one of the most anticipated fashion events of the year, the Met Gala is often dubbed ‘the biggest night in fashion’, drawing parallels to the significance of The Superbowl and The Oscars.

The star-studded fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute takes place every year to celebrate the opening of its annual fashion exhibit. Guests will be gracing the red carpet in extravagant looks that usually follow the set theme for the year, with past themes including, ‘Magnus X Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology'(2016), ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination(2018)’ and ‘Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations'(2012).

The Met Costume Institute announced the Gala’s theme: “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.

The exhibition for Spring 2024 will present an immersive experience showcasing 250 archival garments and accessories from the museum. The spectacle will also be highlighting the sensory elements of fashion through images of nature, the impermanence of fashion and exploring themes of renewal as well as spring.

“Juxtaposing historical fashions with contemporary counterparts the exhibition will employ diverse technologies — including augmented reality, AI, CGI, animation, projection and soundscapes — to breathe new life into these storied objects through creative and immersive activations designed to convey the scent, sounds, textures and motions of garments that can no longer directly interact with the body,” revealed the Met Costume institute.

The collection will comprise delicate pieces that cannot be used due to their fragile nature. Hence, through a line-up of technology and a 19th-century theatre technique known as Pepper’s Ghost — employed to create illusions — the exhibit brings these ‘Sleeping beauties’ to life.

The 2024 Met Gala is set to take place on 6 May 2024 and it’s sure to be a glamorous evening of splendour, celebrating the beauty of historical archives, among art and fashion.
