Giambattista Valli is the latest fashion designer to tackle activewear. The couturier – whose brand is all about statement eveningwear and red-carpet worthy dressing – is said to be releasing a sporty range of around 50-60 pieces.

“It’s a capsule collection where we will express a more functional side of the brand, while remaining faithful to the atmosphere of the contemporary chic that is part of its DNA,” Valli told WWD.

While Valli’s creations are famous for their glamour, the last few seasons has seen him take on a few more casual designs, including teaming evening jackets with Nike leggings and moving into denim. Valli’s recent history as creative director of Moncler’s Gamme Rouge line has also seen him step into more sporty territory.

“I love the idea of introducing new materials to activewear by applying the house’s know-how in handling certain fabrics to this segment,” he said. “It’s extremely Valli, extremely sophisticated, extremely luxurious — but on the other hand, today’s customer mixes Uniqlo with luxury brands.”

The collection will reportedly feature puffer jackets, coats, sweatshirts and tracksuits – and will be launched as early as January 2018. Valli told WWD that the line would include casual clothing with technical elements, including après-ski gear and eventually swimwear and beach separates, but would not include performance attire. Prices will range from €1,100 to €2,500 (about £980 to £2,200).

“This is not a secondary line,” Valli explained, adding that it would be presented on the catwalk alongside the main collection. “We really want to develop the brand in every direction. This is just the start.”
