Prabal Gurung’s 10th anniversary show was intended to to be a celebration of his brand—but it ended up being so much more. An ode to “the true American Dream,” Gurung’s collection walked through the various tentpoles of this country’s fashion history: sportswear, athleisure, denim, tie dye, and (with Charles James in mind per the designer’s Instagram) ballgowns. Florals dotted the entire collection, and they felt inherently celebratory. While the vibrance, zest, and energy was felt in the clothes, it was Gurung’s finale walk and his change in show venue that took center stage. The designer had planned to show his anniversary collection at Hudson Yards, but changed venues in the wake of news that the venue’s chairman would host a fundraiser for Donald Trump. Gurung, a Nepalese immigrant at the helm of an American fashion house, used his finale walk to deck his dynamic and diverse cast of women in pageant sashes with “Who Gets to Be an American?” emblazoned across them. In Gurung’s show notes, he answered his own call: “To me, this country has always been a beacon of hope where one’s wildest ambitions can come true; a melting pot that is colorful, multicultural, and beautiful…I am an American…I continue to seek the America I came here to be a part of—the America that I know is still there. With the Spring 2020 Collection, we seek to celebrate hope, courage, and present an ode to the true American Dream.” —Carrie Goldberg
