Maleficent: Mistress of Evil sees Jolie, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville reprise their roles. The sequel also introduces new cast members Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, Harris Dickinson and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The movie wrapped filming in August 2018.
The first installment explored Maleficent’s back story, and the events and betrayal that led her to become vengeful, prompting her to place a curse on Princess Aurora. Although it wasn’t critically well-received, it did well at the box office, grossing $758.5 million globally on a $180 million budget.
Disney says the sequel explores “the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon-to-be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within”.
