Naturally, all Beckham’s famous US-based friends were quick to congratulate the former footballer and welcome him to his new neighbourhood, in a video montage he shared on his Instagram account.

“Hey, if you need anything, just let me know,” says Will Smith. “You know, that’s kind of my town.”

Some of the world’s greatest sporting stars feature in the film. Usain Bolt offers up his services (“If you need a striker, I’m your guy,”) while Serena Williams welcomes her new “neighbour” to Miami and Tom Brady adds that the new team will be “a great addition to the MLS”.

Jennifer Lopez gives Beckham a friendly reminder that it was she who introduced him to his Miami MLS business partner Marcelo Claure, whose idea it was to launch a team in the city. “I had no idea that by introducing you guys – me! – history would be made,” she says. Lopez and Beckham starred in a Pepsi advert together back in 2005, alongside Beyonce – whose husband Jay-Z also features in the montage extending his congratulations.

Beckham’s proud family also recorded their own messages of support.

“Dad I can’t believe you’re going to be a club owner, that’s so cool – I’m so proud of you,” says Brooklyn, while Victoria adds that she “can’t wait to spend much more time in Miami as a family”. The last word goes to six-year-old Harper, who says: “Hi Daddy, I can’t wait to see your first football match!”

Beckham exercised an option in his contract with former side LA Galaxy to buy an expansion franchise in 2014, reports the BBC. His as-yet-unnamed Miami team will play at a 25,000-seater stadium in the city’s Overtown neighbourhood.
