The 2019 Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and as ever, there was plenty to applaud, plenty to shrug at, and plenty to be enraged by depending on your preferences. Paul Schrader’s moral drama First Reformed earned a nomination for its screenplay, but Ethan Hawke’s lead performance as a conflicted pastor—which has drawn effusive praise and multiple nominations since the film’s debut at Venice last year—was left out of the Best Actor field.
