Noordin Mews is Where You Need to Stay on Your Next Visit to Penang

Clock out, check in and unwind.

No matter where your travel plans lead, every destination has a story to tell. Travelling has its way of becoming the most enriching experience. Whether it’s savouring local cuisines or taking a dip into the tapestry of culture, every adventure has the potential to broaden your horizons. It’s one of the reasons why taking a sweet escape from reality has an effect on us to take a pause and reset. In our opinion, Penang has its way of capturing our hearts, from the rich cultural heritage to the vibrant street art.

However, finding the perfect place to unwind at the end of the day completes any adventure. When searching for the ideal place to call home while exploring other destinations, it all comes down to three things: location, ambience and history.

Nestled in the heart of George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage site, Noordin Mews stands out with its quaint charm, cosy ambience, modern facilities and friendly staff. Declaring this a “sanctuary of culture”, Noordin Mews checks all the right points when it comes to checking into a boutique hotel in the heart of Penang.

Once a Straits-Eclectic shophouse, Noordin Mews was owned by six different families and used to house hand-cart stables and trishaws. In fact, if you ask the friendly staff, they’ll be more than happy to guide you through the original structures and hooks on the columns that used to park the stables. Since the hotel opened its doors in 2012, the establishment has quickly risen to prominence for its charming interior, authentic heritage and history.

In April 2024, the hotel went through a six-week refurbishment. In collaboration with Studio Eleven, lead designer Neoh Kim Him created a new look for the 14 rooms, blending a modern feel with the heritage of the space. From bespoke furniture to locally sourced decor and a calming palette that mimics the original room’s furniture, every corner reveals a serene sanctuary that evokes luxury, elegance, and comfort.

If you’re planning a visit to Penang soon, here are a few reasons why we believe Noordin Mews (and Penang) will be your next holiday destination.

Noordin Mews collaborates with local designers and makers

Rooted in history and culture, the hotel celebrates the city’s artisanal spirit by joining efforts with local designers and makers. In every room, you’ll find custom-made ceramic cups by Artisana Pottery by Buttersage and sustainable laundry bags–made from upcycled fabrics sourced from the hotel’s renovations–by Bungkus.

That’s not all. The refurbished rooms also feature exclusive furniture, including the Mews Bench and Corbel Chair, by ByHogen, which mirrors the hotel’s style and interior. While you’re unwinding after a long day, you’ll find signature coffee blends by AE Coffee in the comfort of your room.

What truly sets Noordin Mews apart is its collection of Peranakan and vintage decor pieces scattered throughout the hotel. These unique pieces breathe life into every corner, adding character and charm to the already delightful space.

The Mews Room is a Living Sanctuary

As soon as we stepped inside the Mews Room, we thought of two things: contemporary and comfort. Don’t be alarmed by the 350-square-foot space, as it’s perfect for couples and groups of three. Splashed in neutral tones, the room preserves its vintage charms with elevated comfort.  Staying true to the inspiration of 1950s Shanghai, the reimagined room merges history with a contemporary feel and luxurious touches.

These include double-glazed soundproof windows, motorised blinds, plush Simmons mattresses, Axor Montreux bathroom fixtures, and statement lighting from Anglepoise and Foscarini.

While it was perfect for two, every corner gives every visitor a chance to truly unwind after a long day. Whether it’s by journaling at the vanity table or reading your favourite summer romance books on the day bed, the room is the perfect sanctuary for couples or solo travellers. Not to mention, their lush courtyard and pool score extra points if you prefer the outdoors for some TLC.

Their turn-down service is something you’ll cherish after a long day. From the inviting ambience they create to the perfect lighting adjustments made as soon as you enter, it’s the thoughtfulness that stands out. Additionally, you’ll find delightful treats like cookies or candy placed on the vanity, providing a sweet reward at the end of your day.

The Incredible Location Makes Exploring Seamless as Ever

With a location that’s steeped in history, Noordin Street was actually named after Habib Merican Noordin, an 18th-century Indian Muslim merchant. Once upon a time, this same street was fuelled by the energy radiating from the dance halls, social hubs and cinemas. And thanks to its strategic location, exploring George Town’s hotspots was seamless. The famed art and event space, Hin Bus Depot, is located 10 minutes away, while Chowrasta Market is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel. And while you’re at the market, take a stroll towards the famous Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul to cool down from the heat. Or, enjoy a bite of the famous Amy Oyster Omelette–trust us, you won’t regret it.

Breakfast for Slow Mornings at Noordin Mews

While Penang may be a food haven for many, the hotel provides a daily breakfast for those who prefer to sleep in a little more. Breakfast is available by order, and the staff will contact you the night before to take your menu selections. Our highlight? Their Chocolate Chip Pancake, topped with thick cream and orange, and their French Toast. While you’re there, their Daily Asian Selection changes every day, so be sure to inquire about their specials.
