AINA SYAHIRAH & JULIE ANNE KANG

26 & 25, Co-founders of Kulet

On Aina (left): Blazer, stylist’s own. Divas’ Dream necklaces; Divas’ Dream bracelet; and Divas’ Dream ring, all from Bulgari. On Julie (right): Shirt; and skirt, both from Zara. Blazer, Emporio Armani. B.zero1 necklace; B.zero1 earrings; B.zero1 cuff; and Divas’ Dream cuff, all from Bulgari. Hat; and ring, both stylist’s own.

It Girl-turned-shoe designer Aina Syahirah is a picture of elegance. Frequently spotted at Kuala Lumpur’s chicest events, Aina’s sartorial mix of quirky elegance and sophistication easily sets her apart from the rest. She is, after all, a self-confessed Alaïa girl at heart. So, it is only a matter of time until the connection between the fledgling designer and Clueless’s Cher Horowitz is made. But forget about brands—Aina is no fashion victim. To her, fashion is not always about labels, rather, to quote her favourite designer Ralph Lauren, “Fashion is about something else that comes from within you.”

“To me, style is something that can’t be copied or replicated,” says Julie. “It’s not just about the pieces you wear, but it’s the vibe you emanate when you wear something.” In this regard, casting Julie as one-half of Clueless’s dynamic duo was completely spot-on, considering her compelling portrayal as Dionne Davenport. A walking embodiment of the “tried and tested” style mantra, Julie sticks to true classics, like the Emporio Armani polka-dot blazer and checked blouse she wore on the day of our shoot. “For me, it’s all about picking one trend that works for you, and mixing it with your favourite pieces.” Tricks of the trade, indeed.
