It’s time to be bewitched by Laufey
Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter and record producer, Laufey — Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir — is buzzing wildly in the music industry by redefining jazz. Making a name for herself, the multi-talented artist has been garnering die-hard fans for her unique take on jazz-pop tunes. Well-versed in piano, guitar, cello and self-producing, Laufey is about to be the next rising star.
Raised in a musical-inclined family, it’s no surprise that music is a big part of her life. With a violinist mother and grandparents who were pianists and violinist educators, Laufey developed a deep interest in pursuing a music career. On top of that, her father also introduced her to the world of jazz, which greatly influenced her diverse musical taste. But, what kicked off her career trajectory had to be her love for the Bossa Nova tunes — the spark that ignited her goals.
Taking a leap of faith, Laufey made her debut in 2022 releasing her ‘Everything I Know About Love’ album. Highlighting personal growth and hopelessly romantic songs based on real-life experiences, Laufey’s album showcased that there’s always magic even during difficult or bleak moments in life.
All thanks to her unique take on jazz, the album dominated the charts — pushing down the trending, pop music that usually reigns supreme. Her debut album was well-received, with the track “Fragile” standing out the most from my perspective. Her distinct sound and heartfelt songwriting have made her a rising star in contemporary music, capturing the hearts of Gen Zs.
Laufey’s success continued with the release of her second album in 2023, ‘Bewitched’. Drawing inspiration from jazz greats and classical masters, this album solidified her reputation as a trailblazer in contemporary jazz. The song “From the Start” has gained favour among the public, including me. The album won the 66th Annual Grammy Award for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album”, showcasing her remarkable growth as an artist.
As Laufey prevails in the music industry, she will be bringing her jazz tunes to Malaysia on 27 August, as part of her “The Goddess Tour”. Tickets are already sold out on the website, showing the high anticipation for this concert and its extensive popularity among locals.
On top of her music, Laufey is also known for her sense of style. She can often be seen wearing elegant or vintage-inspired outfits to exude her personality and career. Her style is simple, yet there is always an item that elevates the whole ensemble, making it perfect for outfit inspiration.
