As celebrities arrived to tonight’s Emmys red carpet, a surprising color trend quickly emerged: pink and red colorblocked gowns. The bright color pairing was spotted in many forms—from puff-sleeved gowns to cascading cape dresses—on a number of twinning celebrities including Taraji P. Henson, Mandy Moore, and Zoe Kazan.
This Is Us star Mandy Moore was one of the first to kick off the red carpet trend, arriving in a stunning Brandon Maxwell gown. The pink and red design featured a thigh-high slit and puffy off-the-shoulder sleeves.
Then, Moore’s This Is Us co-star Susan Kelechi Watson also showed up in a twinning pink and red gown—leading fans to think the duo planned to match for the night.
But the trend didn’t slow down there. Taraji P. Henson twirled onto the Emmys red carpet in yet another pink and red gown—hers a cascading sheer cape design by Vera Wang.
Marisa Tomei opted for the look in a one-shouldered hot pink and red gown.
And Zoe Kazan took the pink and red trend back to the ’80s with giant shoulder pads and a bow-embellished gown by Gucci.
Shades of blue—namely baby blue—started out as a strong trend on the Emmys red carpet, but ultimately, pink and red emerged as the real winner tonight. Where did the seemingly random color combination come from? Yes, bright pink was one of the hottest color trends on the Fall 2019 runways, but more significantly, the bright and playful color combination is all about having fun with fashion. Given the endlessly chaotic news cycle of late, perhaps celebrities are simply turning to red carpet fashion as a form of escapism and joy—something we could all use a little more of in our lives.
