Luang Prabang, Laos

The full Laotian experience is not complete without a quick trip to Luang Prabang, former capital of Laos and UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was awarded for its exotic blend of architectural wonders.

Downtown Luang Prabang is graced by colonial architecture

Known for its numerous Buddhist temples and monasteries, witness the centuries-old tradition of alms gathering by hundreds of monks, wrapped in bright traditional sienna fabric, walking through the streets at dawn.

The Red Chapel of Wat Xieng Thong is decorated with colourful mosaics, and houses a reclining Buddha

Follow the procession to Wat Xieng Thong, a Buddhist temple complex built in 1560, where their carved, gilded wooden doors feature a depiction of the Tree of Life in glass mosaic, Laotian legends, and dharma wheels that symbolise the Buddhism circle of reincarnation. Continue your sacred journey with 355 steps up Mount Phousi, which is right next to the Nam Khan River. Along the way, you’ll see numerous display of Buddha statues in several mudras, and a small cave temple with a sitting Buddha surrounded by followers. After this zen hike, the feeling of satisfaction comes complete with sweeping views of the city, with the golden sun lighting up the day.

The spectacular bright turquoise pools at Kuang Si Waterfall reminds one of the travertine terraces of Pamukkale
