Here’s Where Royal Couples Went On Their Honeymoons

#1. Queen Elizabeth and King George VI, 1923

After being introduced in 1920, Elizabeth rejected the future king’s proposals twice. She was wary of the overwhelming responsibility of becoming a royal, but eventually agreed to become George’s wife.

The royal couple spent two weeks at Polesden Lacey, a manor house in Surrey.

#2. Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten, 1947

The couple first met in 1934 at the wedding of Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark who was Philip’s cousin. After more than a decade of courtship, the two were officially engaged in 1947 and married at Westminster Abbey.

They spent their honeymoon at Birkhill Lodge, part of the Balmoral Estate in Hampshire and home of Philip’s uncle, Earl Mountbatten.

#3. Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III of Monaco, 1956

Kelly first met Prince Rainier III at the Cannes Film Festival in April 1955, after she was invited to take part in a photo session at the Palace of Monaco.

She and Rainier took a seven-week Mediterranean cruise on his yacht, Deo Juvante II, and made a stop at the Hotel Formentor in Mallorca.

#4. Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips, 1973

The only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, Princess Anne married Mark Phillips, a lieutenant in the 1st Queen’s Dragoon Guards, at Westminster Abbey.

They spent their honeymoon aboard the royal yacht Britannia, traversing the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

#5. Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew, 1986

Sarah and Andrew knew each other as children and later became romantically linked after meeting again at a party at Floors Castle. Four months after Prince Andrew proposed on his 26th birthday, they were married.

The couple boarded a a jet for the Azores Islands near Portugal, and then went for a five-day sail in the Atlantic aboard the royal yacht Britannia.

Victoria married Daniel Westling at the Stockholm Cathedral, and they later moved into the Haga Palace together.

Swedish billionaire Bertil Hult offered the newlyweds use of his jet, yacht, and ranch in Beaver Creek, CO for their honeymoon. Other stops on their honeymoon included New York City, Bora Bora, and French Polynesia.
