It does not advertise safety features or enumerate crash-test scores. Instead, by inputting personal details such as age, career, income, dependents, lifestyle and personal stakes, the calculator generates a safety risk profile that estimates the financial and emotional impact people’s absence would have on those around them. Then, they are grouped into one of the four life-stage profiles: the backbone of the family, the co-pilot in a partnership, the independent soloist with a future ahead, and the climber who has worked tirelessly to build the life they have today.
“Nothing is worth more than your life, but there are still times when we forget and take our safety for granted—drivers are humans after all. The Selamat Calculator isn’t meant to put a price on a life, but to act as a gentle reminder to appreciate the value of our presence and what stands to be lost in our absence. Because the true value of our Selamat isn’t measured by wealth but in the people we hold close and the accomplishments we make,” said Patricia Yaw, sales and marketing director of Volvo Car Malaysia.
And in the end, for all its quiet sophistication, the Selamat Calculator arrives at something beautifully uncomplicated. It puts the notion simply that buckling a seatbelt, getting enough rest, and exercising patience behind the wheel is what will keep us safe for our future generations.
