Oscar Gold

The 87th Academy Awards saw Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel tied for most nominations, with both films winning four awards each. Best Picture and Best Director went to the former, with filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu defeating Hollywood heavyweights such as Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater. Eddie Redmayne’s portrayal of the legendary Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything earned him Best Actor, the nominees for which also listed Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Keaton, while Julianne Moore found herself fifth-nomination lucky, taking home Best Actress for Still Alice.

Performances included Rita Ora’s excellent rendition of “Grateful” as well as the winner of Best Song, “Glory” by John Legend, Common, and the cast of Selma. But the greatest surprise was Lady Gaga’s tribute to The Sound of Music, which earned praise from Dame Julie Andrews herself: “It really warmed my heart.”
