Virgil Abloh launches his limited-edition Ikea collection

Virgil Abloh has unveiled his much-anticipated Ikea collection, featuring 15 pieces that aim to bring high fashion to the interiors world – and at a budget-friendly price point.

Designing with the young in mind, the Off-White and Louis Vuitton designer has combined high art references with his streetwear heritage. Abloh has brought his signature humour and wit to everyday objects, for example a rug created to look like an Ikea receipt or a carrier bag that reads “sculpture” in bold text.

Abloh says his decision to put a doorstop on a wooden chair leg created an “interruption” – a theme for the collection as a whole – giving ordinary items an unexpected design twist.

“I want each item to bring people a sense of pride, and I want great design to be the biggest reason why you get it,” he said. “It’s about elevating the anonymous, everyday icons that we use without noticing.

“This collaboration has been the most rigorous of any design project I’ve done,” he added. “There are only a few moments in a design career that you get to work with the absolute best in class, and my concept of design resonates with IKEA’s democratic design principles, with the idea that great design can be accessible for the many people.”

The Scandinavian furniture brand is expecting the collection to be a big hit. Shoppers must sign up for a limited number of free tickets via Eventbrite, which will be released at 10am on 18 October, allowing ticket holders to visit Ikea Dublin, Wembley and Croydon stores on 1, 2 or 3 November to purchase the collection. Access will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis and customers are allowed to buy up to five items.
