Giorgio Armani recently suffered a nasty fall that resulted in a fractured shoulder and 17 stitches, but that didn’t stop the 86- year-old designer from hosting his first fashion show in 16 months.

The fashion show that took place in Milan debuted virtually, while the pandemic continues to impact the fashion industry. According to Armani, “Fashion cannot survive for long in an exclusive virtual form. Fashion needs to be seen in real life and I have always worked hard to make fashion for real life.”

Armani’s show was the closing of a weekend of menswear fashion week events. This is the first time the Italian fashion industry is making its first steps towards the possible return of fashion week. Previously, Milan Fashion week would host thousands of guests, media and celebrities from all over the world. But still, they are nowhere near the usual 40 scheduled live fashion shows.

This season saw Armani, Dolce & Gabanna and Etro holding physical shows with guests in Milan. While other menswear brands resorted to virtual shows and presentations.

“The digital fashion show is fake,” said Domenico Dolce alongside his co-designer Stefano Gabbana, whose 94-model show on Saturday was their first since September. “It’s not a fashion show to do it digitally, between post-production and everything you lose the show. For us, the show is the moment the clothes connect with people and we [also] get a feeling of what people think about the clothes.”
