BAZAAR Hair Awards 2019: Colourist Of The Year

Colourist of the Year

Yap Boon Han, artistic stylist, Centro W Salon

With nearly a decade of experience under his belt, Johor-born Han has amassed a legion of fans thanks to his prodigious skill and multi-dimensional dye work. Armed with an arsenal of techniques and a fine eye for colour, the young stylist has become the go-to for KL’s most stylish influencers the likes of Jane Chuck, Brian See, and Joyce Wong.

A master shade-shifter, Han’s ingenuity and creativity work best when it’s a collaborative vision with his clients. Believing that hair is an extension of someone’s personality, he views each client, cut, and colour as an opportunity. “It’s about creating a bespoke statement piece. My best and most loyal patrons are ones who trust my intuition.” And trust is paramount in this line of work. “It’s a two-way street; I respect the vision you have for your hair, and you trust that I will do whatever it takes for the best outcome.”

Beyond chasing fads and trends or anything on social media, this rising star has always been drawn to creative hues and the exploration of unique colour combinations. Han’s expertise extends throughout the entire spectrum, breathing new life into hair whether it is pretty pastels or deep, rich shades. “Han took special care to ensure that my hair stayed healthy and silky throughout a rigorous bleach and colour process. Splitting the process to a two-day session, my new blue and pink hair feels nourished, silky, and luscious,” says BAZAAR’s beauty editor Teh Sue May.
