Jen Atkin’s client list reads like a who’s who of modern day Hollywood. From the Kardashians, Jenners and Hadids to Chrissy Teigen, Jessica Alba and Karlie Kloss – it’s a wonder she has time to run her own haircare line, Ouai (pronounced ‘way’, fyi).

The queen of current, today’s most in-demand hairstylist has the ability to set trends from her smart phone. Every style she shares via social media is welcomed with likes, complements and copycats.

Of course, the 37-year-old keeps her own ‘do modern, experimenting with bobs, ‘bangs’ and cool girl texture while maintaining an air of classic through its shape and shine.

Besides celebrating and enhancing your greys, or getting a cut that compliments your facial features, some other techniques to give you a fresher appearance might be overlooked. So we asked Atkin just how your hair can keep you youthful and what mistakes may actually be ageing you. Read on…

1. Take UV protection

“The mistake I see people making with their hair that can age them is not protecting it from heat styling or sun damage. I always suggest using a UV protectant on the hair to protect colour from fading or environmental damage. The Ouai Hair Oil, £24, creates a UV barrier, protecting the strands and hydrating them at the same time.”

2. Pre-empt hair loss

“I really strongly believe that you will not see changes in your hair by just doing external remedies. You need to do internal as well. For years I was sending clients to the health food store to get biotin, and fish oil pills. Our Ouai Thinning Hair Supplements, £26, formula includes ashwagandha extract which is great at reducing stress levels (a major contributor to hair loss), and niacin to help prevent blockage of cholesterol at the pores.”

3. Experiment with cool, current textures

“I love the Christophe Robin balm product with prickly pear oil – it’s a non-sticky, multipurpose balm infused with all-natural butter and oils to nourish the hair and skin. The balm is a great alternative to oils and serums women typically use, and it is also great for any hair type. You can create a tousled/beachy wave look by rubbing some together in your hands and onto your ends for texture. To tame frizz, rub a little on your hair and smooth down flyaway. And for curls, it can be used to redefine and add shine/hold.”

4. Don’t be afraid of accessories

“I love hair accessories. It’s such a simple way to upgrade your look or for taking your hair from day to night. My go-to hair accessories are Chloe + Isabel Hair. They’re perfect for the glam girl that likes to dress things up or for the low maintenance girl that wants something fast to dress up her look. There are so many accessories to choose from, but the Bun Cuff is perfect to accent a topknot, you know, for those days after a sweaty gym class and you just don’t have the time to do anything else before dinner. It can dress up any look; the cuff even doubles as a bracelet!”
