Fox released a 30-second teaser for the new season of Empire a few weeks ago and it was delightful, but now they’ve released a full-length trailer that’s a whopping minute and ten seconds. As regular Empire viewers know, the creators of this show can fit in a lot a minute and 10 seconds, so don’t be surprised if everything you see here happens in just the first episode. Cookie visits Lucious in prison, where he tells her, “You always were a ride-or-die bitch. Always.” Then there’s more footage of the #FreeLucious concert, followed by Andre saying his first order of business is to remove Lucious Lyon as CEO of Empire. That’s cold, Andre, but probably for the best. Jamal is still possessed by the spirit of evil, telling Hakeem he’s going to bury his album and listening while his dad tells him to “handle” Andre. Such drama!
Also visible in this teaser are guest stars Chris Rock, Ludacris, and Marisa Tomei, because you can never have too many people starting shit on one TV show. And is that a body in the prison yard at the 55-second mark? To quote Lucious, game over! (Followed by creepy laugh.)
In other amazing Empire news, co-creator Lee Daniels says a spinoff is “without question” in the works. “There’s so much ripe story that we’ve talked about already — about Cookie’s family, what makes her her,” he said during the TCA summer press tour. “That in itself is fascinating to me.” He hinted that the spinoff might be partially a prequel about Cookie, because really, who wouldn’t want to know more about Cookie? “Here Cookie is now, but how did she get to where she’s at right now?” he said. “Let’s go back and understand her mother, her sisters…Let’s understand the makings of her.” Yes, let’s! Even if it’s just for the outfits.
