As a computer-engineering major, Faouzia wears many hats. Growing up, she expresses herself through her incredible songwriting skills by writing short stories and making movies. That’s not all. She shows appreciation for fashion and is incredibly fluent in Arabic, English and French. As a multi-instrumentalist, this talented star also plays the piano, violin and guitar – honestly, what can she not do?

The singer’s music exudes passion and confidence, drawing inspiration from powerhouse divas like Beyonce, Rihanna, and Lady Gaga. The music of Umm Kulthum, a well-known Egyptian singer/songwriter, and Fairuz, a Lebanese vocalist, also profoundly impacted her. Their work has left an enduring impression she still carries with her today.

Her captivating sound is genuinely spellbinding. Since releasing her debut single “Knock On My Door”, the talented star was given her first Top 10 Entry on the US iTunes charts, along with a myriad of accomplishments. Undoubtedly, with her diverse talents, Faouzia will continue to achieve remarkable feats!

Hi Faouzia, how are you today?

Faouzia: I’m doing good. How are you?

I’m good. Thank you. Let’s go straight into it. What has been the most rewarding experience since releasing your first single, “Knock On My Door,” at 15?

F: Wow, that is a tough question. I would say releasing “Citizens” and going on tour because much of my career happened throughout the pandemic. And so, I never got to see anyone physically since everything was online. Therefore, touring the world – in Europe, the Middle East and North America – and seeing everyone listening to my music and supporting me until my first project release has been the most rewarding moment for me.

The past few years have been incredible for you with chart-topping hits and collaborations with renowned artists like John Legend and Kelly Clarkson. What was it like working with them?

F: Working with John Legend and Kelly Clarkson was absolutely unreal. I grew up listening to their music. I remember specifically singing “Since You’ve Been Gone” and “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson, along with “All of Me” by John Legend, on karaoke when I was very young. So to be on the same song as them and to hear our voices intertwine and harmonise on top of each other was surreal. I remember having chills listening to our songs for the first time.

Do you have any artists in mind that you want to work with in the future?

F: One of my favourite artists is Stromae. He sings in French, and he’s a musical genius. I would love to work with him one day.

You started writing songs at a very young age. What inspires you to create music?

F: I’ve been pulling from my personal experiences more. I used to love telling stories and writing about people around me and myself. But lately, I’ve been on a very personal journey and writing about events in my life. I find it very therapeutic to write about things that are happening. Plus, I also think it’s extraordinary when you see others relating to the music you write, and seeing it helps others because it helps me get through the times when I write about it.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time when you’re not on tour or composing?

F: I enjoy going on walks, seeing movies in theatres and playing video games. (laughs) I really love playing board games too. I find joy in things that are fun and easy. In fact, I saw the Super Mario movie two days in a row. (laughs)

We love that! What is your all-time favourite song?

F: “Paparazzi” by Lady Gaga.

Can you summarise your sound in three words?

F: Emotional, up-tempo and pop.

Ok, let’s talk fashion. Your style is chic, effortless and completely ethereal. Do you have a fashion icon to look up to?

F: Rihanna and Lady Gaga!

If you had to choose a fashion designer to work with, who would it be?

F: That is an excellent question. I’ve been loving Versace’s designs lately, so I will go with Versace.

How thrilled are you to perform for your Malaysian fans for the first time in July?

F: I’ve been telling all my friends and family how excited I am. I genuinely feel so much excitement every day, and I’m counting down the days. Honestly, I’m excited to see the crowd. I heard that Malaysian crowds are passionate and so much fun – it will surely be a night to remember.

Catch her live at the Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur, on 13 July. There are three tickets available: RM398.00 (CAT 1), RM358.00 (CAT 2) and RM298.00 (CAT 3). Purchase your tickets here.
