The 2019 Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and as ever, there was plenty to applaud, plenty to shrug at, and plenty to be enraged by depending on your preferences. Though the two most nominated films—The Favourite and Roma—are acclaimed and generally well-liked, there were plenty of divisive choices on the list, not to mention the inevitable slew of disappointing snubs.

Crazy Rich Asians is entirely shut out.

While romantic comedies don’t have a strong track record at the Oscars, Crazy Rich Asians felt like the kind of cinematic landmark that the Academy would recognize. It’s both a spectacularly entertaining crowd-pleaser and a watershed moment for Asian representation in Hollywood, and to see it ignored even in categories like Costume and Production Design is a real shock—not to mention the lack of a Supporting Actress nomination for undisputed icon Michelle Yeoh.
