8 Snubs, Surprises, and New Records Set By The 2019 Oscar Nominations

The 2019 Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and as ever, there was plenty to applaud, plenty to shrug at, and plenty to be enraged by depending on your preferences. Though the two most nominated films—The Favourite and Roma—are acclaimed and generally well-liked, there were plenty of divisive choices on the list, not to mention the inevitable slew of disappointing snubs.

Black Panther makes superhero movie history.

It took until 2019 for a superhero movie to be nominated for Best Picture, despite how completely the comic book genre has taken over blockbuster filmmaking. Not even Christopher Nolan’s acclaimed The Dark Knight earned a nod in 2009, though it did get eight nominations and two wins. Ryan Coogler’s groundbreaking and singular Black Panther couldn’t be a more deserving record-breaker, testing the boundaries of what a Marvel movie can achieve both artistically and thematically.
