5 Ryan Coogler not nominated for Best Director.

Disney

The historic nomination of Black Panther for Best Picture makes Ryan Coogler’s absence from the Best Director character sting. While it’s easy to dismiss superhero movies as formulaic or unimaginative as far as directing goes, Black Panther could not be further from that stereotype thanks to Coogler’s distinctive vision of Wakanda. Just as he did with the Creed series before, Coogler put his own stamp on the MCU and created a huge, entertaining blockbuster that’s also a story about identity, race and privilege. If he couldn’t make it into this category, it’s hard to imagine any superhero director ever managing to.
