THE ALTERNATIVE OPTIONS

8. Kokomo

A Caribbean-style beach bar on the rooftop terrace of an unassuming building might not be what you’d expect to find in Beijing, but in the fabled party area Sanlitun, it makes perfect sense. In summer, the lively terrace, decked out with small palms, a wooden deck and umbrellas, is the perfect place to spend a warm night, while in winter the terrace is covered and heated, making it a tropical respite from the cold. The quality cocktails and the occasional live bands will give you plenty of reasons to slow down to a Caribbean pace and linger.

9. Daga Brewpub

The craft beer scene is having a moment in China, and at Daga Brewpub you can explore beers from microbreweries all over the country. The place is relaxed, and the soundtrack is often as cutting edge as the industrial-chic decor; the concrete floors, high ceilings and beaten-up retro furniture across the two small rooftops wouldn’t look out of place in Brooklyn or Berlin. Take a seat at the rooftop between the trees and taste your way through China’s beer scene.
