This Japanese Island Has Been Named the World’s Top Trending Travel Destination for 2018

If you’re looking for an exotic beach holiday, this Japanese island is set to be this year’s dream destination.

Ishigaki in Japan’s Yaeyama archipelago has been named the top trending travel destination for 2018 by TripAdvisor.

The island has topped the travel site’s ‘Destinations on the Rise’ list, which used an algorithm to track the year-on-year increase in positive TripAdvisor reviews on accommodation, restaurants, and attractions, as well as an increase in booking interest.

Ishigaki, the main island in Japan’s southwestern Okinawa Prefecture, is known for its natural beauty. It is covered with mountains and is home to white sandy beaches, colourful coral reefs and some of the region’s bluest waters, which have made the island a sought-after spot for snorkelling and diving. Ishigaki’s palm forests and mangrove lined rivers also make it a great location for hiking and camping.

Foodies won’t be disappointed, either. Along with Ishigaki beef, local ‘Yaeyama soba’ noodles are said to be the most popular dish amongst Japanese tourists, as they are made with flour instead of the more traditional buckwheat variety found on the mainland.

When it comes to getting there, it’s easier to reach than you might think. The island is served by a new airport, with direct flights from Tokyo taking around three and a half hours. Visitors can also enjoy a warm climate – the average annual temperature is 23.6°C and choose from a range of hotels – the average annual price is £114 per night.
