KL Alternative Bookfest ( KLAB 2016 ) + Art For Grabs
“One weekend to present a veritable pre-Ramadhan buffet of delights.” Held for the 9th year in a row, KL Alternative Bookfest #KLAB2016, sponsored by Fixi and Gerakbudaya, is back with Art For Grabs. In celebration of Malaysian indie publishers – 27 publishers of books, comics and zines, complete with 54 booths of handmade goods, food and arts & crafts.
Beautiful Handicrafts Of Tohoku, Japan – Galeri Shah Alam, 9:00am-5.00pm, 16 May–21 June
Pottery, lacquer ware, textiles, basket weaving, metalwork and woodwork – all in commemoration of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. A display of traditional craftsmanship of the region still recovering from the disaster. 70 objects that encompass the epitome of the highly-developed techniques and functional elegance of these implements.
R E T R O S P E K T I V: A Solo Exhibition by Nicholas Choong – 10.00am-5.00pm, 3-19 June
36 works of various sizes and mediums: “R E T R O S P E K T I V is about how time, fear, faith and experimentation influence the creation of art. From small watercolours and prints to large scale acrylic paintings on canvas, each piece of art reflects the artist’s life at different points in time.”

Barbie: World of Endless Possibilities – 6-12 June, Orange Concourse, Sunway Pyramid
250 Barbie dolls – all to display the iconic fashion doll’s history from her debut in 1959. The exhibition’s highlight: ‘Barbie, The Muse’, features the doll dressed in pieces by Moschino, Karl Lagerfeld, Carolina Herrera, Versace, Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang, Dior and Calvin Klein. Children welcome for storytelling and cake decorating, designing Barbie’s outfits and playing dress-up. #YouCanBeAnything
Love Me In My Batik – ILHAM Gallery, until 20 June
Featuring over 39 artists, a showcase of modern batik designs from 1960s to 1980s and a comparison between the batiks of Malaysia and Indonesia. Voyage through the journey of batik – a distinct modern art form that emerged in Malaysia and beyond from 1950’s to the present day. An exhibition that analyses the reinvention of the medium by generations of artists.
Presenting its finest collection of one of the most important manuscripts in the Islamic World until August; highlighting Dala’il al-Khayrat copies from its native land, Morocco to as far as East Turkistan and China. Dala’il al-Khayrat has inspired calligraphers, illuminators and painters of court ateliers in producing sumptuous illustrated and illuminated manuscripts that reveal the history and the diverse art form of the Islamic World.
