Created in 1947, the handbag remains one of the pillars of the House’s signature bag collection. At a time where traditional raw materials were difficult to come by, Guccio Gucci looked to the durable and lightweight bamboo as a source of inspiration. And with the help of the skilled Florentine artisans, the humble bamboo was fashioned beautifully into the handle of a purse.

The bag’s distinctive design became an instant hit and was “a fixture among Hollywood’s leading ladies”. In order to make the bag, unblemished pieces of bamboo are softened and worked over an open flame by hand. Next, the handle is coated in multiple layers of lacquer to achieve a golden-brown finish.

This season, the new iteration of the timeless classic is distinguished by interchangeable leather and Web straps. Offering versatility and practicality, the straps are also adjustable, making it suitable for many occasions. Wear yours to the office and straight to dinner for a chic look that will get you compliments.
